i wanted to be a blue man… pt 1
Posted: January 5th, 2009 | | 3 Comments »About a year ago, I was helping organize a conference in New York City. I met a drummer while I was there, who asked me a question that I will never forget. He asked “Have you ever thought about being a Blue Man?”
I kinda laughed and didn’t really consider it an option until I was coming up on the end of my tenure at Grace Campus Ministries. I did some research online and somehow talked myself into trying out.
The next thing I knew, I was in Chicago, IL lugging bags on and off planes, trains, and… well I didn’t take a taxi, so no automobiles, but I did do a lot of walking. Anyways, I went and saw a show the day before the audition (open call) to do a little research. It looked like fun. Sometime during this day, I convinced myself that I could do this. As a drummer I knew I could handle the music – mainly 16th notes over and over – but didn’t really think too much about what the acting portion would require. I should have…
To make a really long story only a long one, I went to the audition, waited in line, and made it through the interview. I then made it to a room with about 10 guys in it, that had also made the first cut. I listened to what they were all talking about, and they were mainly worried about music. None seemed to have anything that resembled any real professional drumming experience. I felt even better. I finally made it to my music tryout and passed with flying colors. I even was referred to as “impressive.”
After being given my call back time and location. I felt invincible. I was extatic and ready to find an apartment and take over the city. I still hadn’t really considered the “acting” portion of what lied ahead of me. Again, I should have.
To be continued….
So is there a part 2???
